Letter sent to Dr. R. Bindu , Higher Education Minister and Registrar, Mg University Kottayam, regarding non-Inclusive application forms of the MG University
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Association for Social Change Evolution and Transformation (ASCENT), a non-profit organization working towards mental health advocacy and gender sensitization. We have an important concern regarding the gender binary stereotype still present in the semester examination registration form of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
The current form only provides two gender options, Male and Female, which does not recognize or include individuals who identify outside of the gender binary. This exclusion could be discriminatory and cause distress to students who do not identify as either male or female. Although we are aware that the university already provides admission to transgender persons in various academic programs as per the policy decision of the government of Kerala, we strongly believe that the current form is not inclusive enough. We also appreciate the university's efforts in introducing transgender as a category for arts and sports events. However, we urge the university to take urgent action to make changes to all forms and include and respect individuals who identify as non-binary, genderqueer, or gender nonconforming. This change will promote inclusivity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity, and improve the goodwill enjoyed by the university. We hope that you will give this matter your immediate attention and take necessary steps to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students. Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter.
Sincerely, Dwitheeya Pathiramanna, Chair, On behalf of ASCENT
