18 Days Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on 

Mastering Research Methods
in Behavioural Sciences

The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) Mastering Research Methods in Behavioural Sciences having a duration of 18 days jointly organised by the Department of Psychology, St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam and Association For Social Change, Evolution, and Transformation (ASCENT) was conducted online from 04-01-2022 to 16-02-2022. Each day of the FDP had two hours of sessions containing detailed lectures with discussions. 

The total duration of the training was 36 hours. The FDP was facilitated by Shiju Joseph (Assistant Professor of Psychology at Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram), Dr. Chinchu C ( Research Associate at Women's Studies Centre, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) ), Dr. Sameer Babu (Associate Professor, Department of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), University), Dr. Anil Chandran S ( Head of the Department, Department of Demography, University of Kerala and Honorary Director of Population Research Centre, University of Kerala.),  Dr. Priya K Nair (Assistant Professor at the Department of English, St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.),   Dr. Archana Arun ( Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Kerala.) and Mr. Jimson E. R. (Executive director, ASCENT). 
 

Syllabus of the FDP

  • Developing Research Aptitude

  • Guiding Student Projects in Psychology

  • Research Ethics: Plagiarism, Ethics Committee, Ethical Approval Process, Helsinki guidelines, Journal Article Reporting Standards (JARS) - APA Style, and Pre-Registration.

  • Identifying a research problem and formulating a  research question

  • Research Problem/Question Exercise with newspaper

  • (i) Literature review: How to do a literature review and how not to do a literature review

  • (ii) Tool selection for Quantitative studies

  • Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Method.

  • Data Collection: Design of data collection form (Ethical considerations, Consent form/declaration, Demographic variables- how to design items, Scales and instructions, Interview questions, and administration)

  • (i)      Survey data collection using E-forms 

  • (ii)      Data Preparation: Data Entry, Export and Cleaning (Data entry in a spreadsheet,     Basic data cleaning with Spreadsheet, Coding the data)

  • Statistical Analysis (Jamovi and SPSS): Data transformation, Visualization, Descriptive statistics including normality testing, Inferential statistics including t-tests, ANOVA, Correlation, Regression analysis, Factor Analysis, 2 way ANOVA, Factorial ANOVA, and Non-Parametric tests. 

  • Qualitative Analysis: Data Collection tools, Data Preparation, Content Analysis, Coding, Categorization, Interpretation, Thematic Analysis, Grounded Theory, Visual Analysis, Reliability and Validity.

  • Report Writing, Chapterisation, Formatting, and Referencing

  • Reference Management using Zotero and Mendeley

  • Paper presentation, Publication Guidelines, and Synopsis Preparation

  • Template for Presentation to be supplied

  • Scientific Research Paper Writing Skills and converting research findings into popular writing
